Writing A Scientific Research: 5 Basic Formatting Rules

Sometimes scientists need to share their findings about certain subjects with other scientists around the globe. One of the cheapest and easiest ways to do it is writing a scientific research. The Overall Structure of the Paper

Basically, the structure of a typical scientific research is to be as follows:

  1. Title and authors.
  2. In other words, the front page with the title of the paper and the name of the person who wrote it.

  3. Abstract.
  4. An “abstract” is a paragraph on the topic, purpose, results and conclusions of the study.

  5. Introduction.

  7. Materials and Methods.
  8. The author is supposed to explain what kind of materials methods and approaches he/she used and why.

  9. Results.
  10. This section is for the results of the study. It may include figures, calculations, tables and graphs.

  11. Discussion.
  12. The author is supposed to explain the correlation between the initial purpose of the study and the results here.

  13. Acknowledgements (optional).

    This is a “thank you” section for the author to express gratitude to those who helped conduct the study.

  14. List of references.
  15. …or a bibliography. That is, an alphabetized list of the books, journals, articles, websites and other sources the author used to write the paper.

5 Important Formatting Rules To Follow Through

Although knowing the typical order of sections is crucial to write a decent scientific research, knowing how to write those sections is even more important. Here is a list of 5 top-important formatting rules every beginner scientist should learn:

  1. Write only one paragraph for your abstract.
  2. The abstract is an introduction paragraph (100-250 words), not a chapter.

  3. Don’t mention the results in the “Materials and methods” section.
  4. You’ll do it later in the “Results” section.

  5. Explain what’s in every graph and in every table.
  6. Make a title for each graph or table and label the x and y axes in the graphs.

  7. Avoid passive voice where possible.
  8. The active voice is clearer and easier to understand.

  9. Don’t overload your readers with information.
  10. Don’t write long sentences or long paragraphs. Try your best to write as clear and concisely as possible.
