Choosing Powerful Healthcare Research Paper Topics For University

Choosing the perfect topic for a research paper can be one of the most stress-inducing parts of the whole research paper writing process. How do you make your paper stand out? Is the topic boring? Is it too simple? Too complex? Throw in a broad, hot-button issue and suddenly it feels like you need to find a topic that has a great deal of significance.

Narrowing It Down

Healthcare is a broad topic with wide-reaching areas for you to focus your attention on. With such a huge amount of choices, how do you know what is important and what isn’t? If you were assigned an area to focus on, then part of your work is done, and you can work on further narrowing things down to find the topic you want to write about.

Some things to consider:

  • Is your course focusing on a particular aspect of healthcare?
  • Do you now a lot about a given area?
  • Do you have an area that you are interested in? (e.g. policy, research, advocacy, etc.)

Powerful vs. Sensational

Now that you have a general idea of what to write, how do you turn it into a thought-provoking paper about one specific thing?

  • Do you want a topic that’s been in the headlines lately?
  • Is there a topic with a particular historic or cultural impact?
  • Is there something that you feel particularly strongly about?
  • Does your university conduct a lot of research in a given area?

Healthcare has been in the news a lot lately, and your first instinct might be to choose something that has been heard a lot. That’s perfectly fine, but just keep in mind that a lot of others will be doing that as well. Sensational topics can also be powerful ones; however, choosing something that’s momentarily sensational might not be as hard-hitting a subject as something that has some kind of historical or cultural impact.

So how do you know the difference? It can be hard to know if the topic you picked is powerful or sensational or some kind of combination of both. Some topics are obvious, those concerning trends most of all. If you are looking for something that is truly powerful, select a paper topic that will appeal to your audience on several levels, you are trying to get them to relate, after all. Granted, not everyone may share a particular viewpoint, but you want to at least present a good argument.
