How to Come Up With Really Good Research Paper Topics: Tips & Examples

Throughout your school career, you’ll no doubt be asked to write research papers multiple times. But how do you write a really good one and score a high grade? There are a few tips and tricks you’ll want to keep in mind. Let’s take a look.

Consider the Class

The first thing you’ll need to do is consider what class your research paper is for. Is it a history class? An English class? What are you learning about? This will give you a place to start when it comes to starting on your essay.

Do You Have Topics Already?

Sometimes, your professor or teacher may have already given you an idea of where to start. Most professors may not give you a specific topic but at least give you a general idea of what subject matter you’ll want to cover. Always make sure that whatever you chose to write about is something relevant to the class and whatever subject matter you’ll need to address.

Brainstorm

This is one of the most important parts of the topic choosing process. Give yourself a good chunk of time where you can brainstorm about what you’d like to write about. Use flowcharts or bubble maps to organize your thoughts. Write down whatever comes to mind. You’ll be narrowing it down later.

Narrowing Your Choices Down

Once you have a list of potential topics, it’s time to narrow your choices down. Ask yourself a few questions to ensure that you can narrow your choices down to ideas worth writing about.

  1. Is it relevant?
  2. Is your chosen topic relevant to your class or the subject matter you’re learning about?

  3. Is it strong?
  4. Do you have enough material to write a full essay about it?

  5. Can you easily research it?
  6. If your topic is too obscure, you may want to reconsider it. Ensure you’ve got plenty of resources about the subject. At least three to five legitimate and credible sources are needed to write an effective research paper. While you definitely want to go with an interesting and unique idea, you don’t want to find yourself hours away from the deadline, unsure of how to research the topic.

Once you’ve got about three to two ideas to work off of, you can narrow it down to the topic that you personally would find interesting to work on. A powerful essay is an essay that you’re interested in writing about.
